Exhibition In C/O Berlin: Zeitlos Schön - 100 Jahre Modefotografie von Man Ray bis Mario Testino

Yesterday was the opening of the exhibition

Zeitlos schön

100 Jahre Modefotografie von Man Ray bis Mario Testino
(translation: timeless beautiful
100 years of fashion photography from Man Ray to Mario Testino),

which will take place from the 18th of August to the 28th of October 2012 in the C/O Berlin.

The curator Nathalie Herschdorfer chose an essence from 100 years of fashion photography from the Condé Nast archives, which are opened for the first time to grant you a view on their photography collection. The exhibition contains over 150 vintage prints together with original magazines, which have never been presented before.

The C/O Berlin always houses interesting and good photography exhibition and I am expecting a lot. Hopefully next week I will have the time to form an opinion by having a look at those prints.

German The German

Lately my father developed some kind of childish pleasure to take pictures of me and my brother, while we are doing daily stuff. Maybe it's because he tries to capture his children (us :)), which are going away again after the summer.
Nevertheless me and my brother are pretty annoyed about it. At least I was untill I saw those pictures.
It's like a little series about our relationship. I think it's beautiful!

Down In The Taunus

Because last thursday hasn't been university (yay to catholic holidays ;)) me and my cousin took the chance to visit our great aunt and her grandmother, which are both living in Hessen.
I will share more pictures with you soon, these are from Saturday, where we wandered over a mountain and enjoyed this beautiful view.

The Meadow We Were Dreaming Of

The last long weekend has been used to visit my boyfriend at his current apprenticeship place. There is this beautiful meadow opposite the building he is living in, where we spent one evening. He was studying and I was taking pictures.

Photographer: RJ Shaughnessy

As long as I am still young, pictures of young person fascinate me. Those pictures were taken by RJ Shaughnessy a young photographer from L.A, who went to Arts Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and graduated in 2004 with a bachelor in fine arts.
They all capture a certain kind of easy- and lightness. I've read that he is capturing only his own friends, maybe that's why he gets such good shots. In an interview he stated: "I try to be as invisible as possible. I don’t really talk to my subjects too much. I have a new shtick: I try to bring someone with me who is more socially skilled than I am to chat them up. I don’t like breaking the wall of people looking into the camera. On Fader assignments I try to bring other people with me to take their attention away from me. I am attracted to images that are observation, opposed to an awkward photograph with the subject looking in the camera."
He also tries to explain how situations he is capturing, which are just kind of normal, become interesting to other people:
"Part of me wants to say editing. The realities of situations are boring, but there has to be something broken within the frame. There are always images that stand out, to me, as far as having realness to them. Those are the images I am attracted by. I don’t take too many photos of one thing. Maybe, three frames."
Actually I was amazed about his advertising work, too. Those pictures for Nike are showing a certain kind of asthethic and expression I don't see a lot in adverts. It's so beautiful!
If you have some time you may want to browse his site.
It's worth a visit!

Maybe you recognize his work for Adidas?

The Rainbow

Now and then I stumble upon a street style picture, which makes me stop for some time and have a closer look at it. This is one of them from the sartorialist.
It is beautiful how the black coat is brightening the colours and letting you have a small glimpse on the jumper beneath. I also like the rolled up sleeves.
It's hard to explain, what you like about a picture and in this case the clothes she is wearing, isn't it?
It's like speaking about a painting, either you like it or not. I like it, when it evokes a certain kind of feeling in me and feelings are not easy to describe. What do you say?

Style Inspiration: Bonnie Strange

So today I want you to meet someone... let's just say ... different. The person I am talking about is Bonnie Strange. She is a photographer, model, blogger, singer, songwriter, stylist and probably even more.
I've never met her in person, eventhough she is living in Berlin at the moment, but I've seen her on various blogs so far, that's why I had to check her out.

She seems to have a lot of energy and claims herself to be a anti fashion superstar. She definitely loves to change her haircolour very often and dye it in popping colours.
I can't decide if I find her disturbing or wonderful and really interesting dressed. But I'll definitley follow her to figure it out.
Check out her blog and her photography page.

Blog Reference: One Portrait A Day

For a while I've been reading this blog called "One portrait a day". It's made by a photographer called Jørn Tomter, who is originally from Norwegia, has been living in Berlin for a while and moved back to London some time ago. He has set himself three simple rules for his blog:
"1) I have to photograph a person I never before have met
2) I have to photograph and post the same day
3) I always ask before I shoot"
He says about himself, that he has a passion for photographing people. He loves looking at photos of strangers shot on location and writes that by time each photograph gets even more interesting. The camera is his key to access strangers' houses, go to interesting places and tell stories.
It's interesting how much you can achieve with three simple rules and a camera. In each post he shares one picture and a little story about the person or the cirumstances of how the picture has been taken.
For me it feels like he opens up the world a bit by showing normal every day people and their stories.

Especially the picture I have chosen to show you from his blog is so interesting and kind of different to what you can see on normal street style blogs. She wears an outfit I would love to sport, but somehow it feels that it wouldn't fit me, because my body is not as curvy as hers. Nevertheless she looks so great!
